(CBS)  Dick Van Dyke celebrates a birthday tomorrow: is 85 and still going. Rita Braver now with this Sunday profile:

This is a story of this dance of and old Song man... Dick Van Dyke back on the stage, performing tunes, which he has rendered celebrates its 85th anniversary by performing a musical home Geffen Play in L.A., with three guys memory less than half his age.

"This guy is not only cool, but it is a cultural icon," a MEP.

Cool - like rap version of the Quartet "Spoonful of Sugar".

But it is not to do. Last week, after the first representation of preview, was cancelled the show. The old trouper injured tendon of Achilles and must remain off the coast of his feet during a period of time.

Feet intervened for half a century ?. and comic timing which laugh us, yet.

Today, Van Dyke lives in Malibu: "I love it", he said defy the tower. "All the time, it is a small piece of the sky back here.

But he grew up in Danville, Illinois, his father, a seller of travel. Brother Dick, Jerry, 6 years younger, has also become an entertainer.

"I think that I have of our parents, who had a sense of humor," Van Dyke said.

In high school, he perfected his magic Act and was clown class and class President.

Dick van Dyke set out to make a name for himself in the entertainment industry. It even organized a new morning show early CBS.

"A 29 years old, they me here," Van Dyke said. "My newsman Walter Cronkite was." You can believe that? I had no idea of what I was doing! »

It makes game host shows. "I was the worst quiz host that ever lived, and I knew," he said. "So every day, I go out and spend a hearing some theatre."

One of these trials was the Director of the new musical:

"When I auditioned for"Bye Bye Birdie"on Broadway, Gower Champion said, ' you have work!" "Van Dyke said." "" I said, ' Mr. Champion, I can?t dance. "" He said: "we enseignerons you what you need to know." "

They have indeed! "Bye Bye Birdie" was a smash. It was the film from 1963.

"I have discovered that it was driving", he said. 'I thought'.Where is that this has been my whole life? » »

But the biggest life changer was still to come. The beginning of the 1960s, actor Carl Reiner has decided to develop television for him.

"He did not develop for me." "It has developed for itself," said Van Dyke. "And the network that he loved, loved him not."

Therefore Reiner convert Van Dyke smart but clutzy comedy writer Rob Petrie, the club played by Rose Marie and Morey Amsterdam.

But the audience really fell in love with Rob, wife Laura, played by 24-year-old Mary Tyler Moore.

"Lots of guys, especially remember mainly the fact that she looked very well in these gauchos," said brave.

"Yes, she did look beautiful in these gauchos!" Van Dyke said. "We ran into trouble, too." And we had to just let out a bit, I found such a sad thing.

"There was a certain sexual energy, I would say, between the two of you on this show," said the brave.

"It's true." "Many people thought that we've been married in real life, which was a great compliment to us," he said. "You know, we had a bit of a crash on the other."

"Never did you something about it." Self-sustaining application.

"No, no, we were all two married."

The show ended after 5 years, but by then Van Dyke was already films. He was personally selected by Walt Disney in the poster with Julie Andrews in "Mary Poppins 1964."

Braves commented on the "magic" of the film. "Yes, there is, and I felt that," he told me. "We would say,"there is something happening here." »

Then is another classic, "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," just released on Blu Ray.

Van Dyke said it will remember the first day of shooting:

"I was sitting in the makeup Chair and the Director calls the make-up man, and I heard him say," that the marked? And makeup guy says, "I'm not a plastic surgeon!" "Van Dyke ri."

Van Dyke and his wife Margie (they divorced in 1984) had four children, and the walls of his house in L.A. are covered with family photos and legends of Hollywood: Fred Astaire, Jack Benny and his special friend, Stan Laurel.

"When I first called him, I said," you know, I stole you somewhat over the years. " And he said: "Yes, I know." "he laughed."

But life of Van Dyke was not all laughter. In 1969 he played an alcoholic in "Comic," a role that hit close when he publicly admitted to his own alcoholism entertainer.

He said that it was now sobre since approximately 24 years. "It went further if slowly and gradually I can't name a date when he just, I couldn't stand the sight, sound or smell to it."

All this, Van Dyke kept working. In 1993 he landed the lead in ' diagnosis: murder, "presence of his son, Barry. Van Dyke played a doctor who sing and dance and also time to solve murder finds.

"We used to leave the search for criminals, and I would say, ' look at the hospital." Person is! "" he laughed. "

For 34 years, until his death last year, Van Dyke lived with Michelle Triola, who made headlines in the 1970s in vain for his old friend, Lee Marvin, palimony.

"Were you ever worried that she would try to you? Self-sustaining application.

"No, we just fall in love," said. "And it is a wonderful 34 years. "It was a force of nature", he laughed.

And here's hoping that Dick Van Dyke will soon be on his feet, enjoying and sharing memories of her remarkable life.
